Instant Comic-Con Memories

Depp

Johnny Depp waves bye-bye

I felt like a crybaby after my Iron Man 2 post, and I didn’t want to sign off like that. Therefore, I hope you enjoy this rundown of my top sightings and experiences at Comic-Con 2009.

  • Terry Gilliam‘s assertion that the creative process can be aided by staying up for three of four days straight
  • Gary Oldman letting it “slip” that Batman 3 will begin filming in 2010, even though writer David Goyer thinks otherwise
  • Realizing that women and men alike are critical and disdainful of Kristen Stewart, perhaps because we all want to be the object of Jacob and Edward’s competitive desire
  • Talking IMDb and its audience with writer Anne Thompson, whose blog will be a part of our News Desk coverage starting the week of August 3rd (!!)
  • Hall H standing ovations for Peter Jackson and Hayao Miyazaki and the thoughtful, humanistic rapport they created with their respective audiences
  • TV editor Michelle Bryant misplacing her press badge in her hotel room less than an hour before the “Lost” panel, and finding it in our parking lot, where it sat overnight
  • Listening to Michelle’s enthusiasm for “Caprica” and how it could literally be spun out into 12 separate but united projects
  • Avatar and District 9‘s thrilling presentations, which put both movies at the top of my to-see list
  • Seeing a father dressed as Batman and his teenage daughter in her street clothes, as if she were his support system
  • Two close encounters with Tim Burton and his word that the Dark Shadows movie will be made
  • Highs and lows courtesy of Timur Bekmambetov: Wanted 2 is alive but the Night Watch trilogy will never be completed
  • Peter Jackson’s candid discussion on how the Halo movie fell apart and that The Hobbit has yet to be greenlit as Warner Bros., proof that there are a few filmmakers who possess the power of free speech
  • Johnny Depp‘s appearance in what could be described as Jack Sparrow formal wear, maybe a hint that the pirate captain will have another adventure, even without director Gore Verbinski
