In addition to all you mentioned, there was racial tension between the Italians and Puerto Ricans, misery at home, and the friendships themselves seemed shallow ("you never called me!") In the end Tony "escapes" by sponging off a girl he barely knows, who herself is sponging off her boss. In every way the movie seems a perfect reflection of late 70's malaise, yet all people seem to remember anymore is "it's that disco movie." On another note: is there one single hit movie of the 70's that doesn't have a story about an out-of-touch movie exec predicting its instant demise?
